In Africa, women empower each other by freely giving a helping hand or word of advice when needed. When a woman goes to get her hair done, she sits at the heart of a semicircle of women who all braid her hair. While they plait, she relies on the honesty and affirmation of the other clients around her as they collectively decide on hair length, colour or styling. Under the baking African sun women commune; laughing together as each offers her best ideas towards the hairstyle. Empowerment becomes an uplifting collaboration between women. Strangers quickly become friends over the simple act of helping each other look their best.
