The hair of a Kenyan woman is her canvas for self expression. She can change her look week to week based on her mood, important events on her calendar or inspiration from one of the numerous gifted hairstylists she knows.
Just like fashion, Kenyan hairstyles go through trends- though some looks remain timeless classics. The versatile box braid, the sleek shoulder-length straight weave and the tight ring curls popular amongst older Aunties are just a few of the common favorites.
One hairstyle to the next can be as different as night and day. Cornrows, weaves, adding beads, threading or splashes of color are a few possibilities- all that stops each woman is her imagination. A walk down Nairobi’s streets becomes a visual delight of smartly dressed women whose looks are tied together by their latest hairstyle.
