CAMO 36 & 37

“A diamond does not lose its value due to lack of admiration.”

African Proverb

No two women’s headwraps are ever the same, as each African woman always adds her own flare and twist to the long strip of fabric coiled around her head. Headwraps were worn frequently by the Artist’s mother, who would always drape the printed fabric in an elaborate design as she prepared for church, weddings or special events; transforming a humble piece of fabric into a beautiful piece of art. Every wrapping is a unique creation of twists, pinning and drape that can never be exactly replicated by its creator once she completes it.

Camo 36 & 37 are modern interpretations to the traditional African fashion piece and a reminder to the viewer that every time a woman puts on a headwrap, she adorns herself with the equivalent of a regal coronet, drawing the viewer’s gaze upwards in the same way a crown does for a queen.
